Book Week 2012

From Monday 9th to Friday 13th January 2012 Book Week was held at Glapthorn School .

There were many visiting speakers and story tellers throughout the week.

Local ‘celebrities’ spoke about the importance of reading and shared their favourite books.  Mrs Louise Mensch MP talked to the children about the stories her parents told her and how they inspired her to write.  Mr Neil Welsh, PE teacher at Prince William School , talked about The Hobbit.  PSCO Tim Butter showed the children his Police issue Blackberry which he reads every day.  Rev. Richard Ormston relayed the story of The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.  Firefighter Matt Prior showed how important it was to read in his job.

Many parents came in to read to the children sharing stories such as: The Hobbit, The Famous Five, poems by Edward Lear and stories by the Brothers Grimm.  They heard Rapunzel, Hairy McClary, Yertle the Turtle, Dooley’s adventures and Aliens in Underpants among others.

The author Michaela Morgan worked with each class on story and poetry writing.  She spent time signing her books and the school book fair raised money for the School Playground Project.

It was an exciting and successful week in promoting reading of every kind to the children.
