About Glapthorn School

Glapthorn C.E. School has been on its present site for 170 years.  It is situated at the end of an attractive Northamptonshire village, and is surrounded on three sides by fields, planted with a range of arable crops.   To the north of the school, beyond a field, is an ancient medieval wood -remaining from the ancient Rockingham Forest  -  Short Wood.   This is now a nature reserve, managed by the Northants Naturalist Trust.  It is an easy 10-minute walk from the school and we often make use of its habitats to reinforce the children's work in science.

Slightly further away - 1.1 km to the west of the school lies another nature reserve - Glapthorn Cow Pasture.   This is another wood, though not so ancient, situated on the site of the common land for Glapthorn, designated by the Norman conquerors - hence its name.   This is also owned and managed by the Naturalist Trust, and is particularly notable as the furthest northern breeding ground of the rare black hair streak butterfly.   Also nightingales can be heard singing in early summer.
The school suffered a major fire in February 2006 but after major rebuilding work, the school consists of a large hall, two new, bright spacious classrooms, a group room and a large library as well as the Reception classroom which is housed in its own building at the front of the school in the oldest part of the school.  It also has its own outside area for the children to play in.
As well as its buildings the school has attractive grounds with a playing field on one side and a large grassed area, " the orchard" on the other.   A notable feature are the many mature trees on the site, particularly the two walnut trees.

We are a 4+ to 9 year old lower school and we are the last remaining lower , middle and upper area in Northamptonshire.   Our maximum school number is 75.

The children are divided into 3 classes as follows :

 Class One  - Reception

Class Two - Year 1 andYear 2

Class Three - Year 3 and Year 4

Mrs Shelley Griffiths teaches Class One, Miss Louise Gregory teaches Class Two and Mrs Lou Coulthard and Mrs Jan Tate teache Class Three

There are 7 classroom assistants.   The day to day administration falls to the School Bursar.

The school has an enviable reputation in the area and a large number of the children come from villages and towns in the Oundle area and from the designated catchment area (the villages of Glapthorn and Southwick).

The school is complemented by the extremely active parents association (Friends of Glapthorn School).   The committee organises several events throughout the year, which not only raise a considerable amount of money but also promote the co-operation and understanding between the school and parents.

We are a caring, friendly school, with high academic standards ; please do not hesitate to contact us for more information if you are looking for a school in the Oundle area: click Head@glapthorn.northants-ecl.gov.uk
